16 JUN: A company which made thousands of marketing calls to people on the ‘Do Not Call Register’ has been fined $120,000, the Herald Sun newspaper reports today.
The register allows people to opt out of receiving unsolicited telemarketing calls.
It is the first court penalty of its kind in Australia.
The Federal Court found that Queensland-based FHT Travel and its director, Yvonne Earnshaw, breached the Act by making more than 12,000 marketing calls to people who had placed their phone numbers on the register.
The calls related to the sale of a card that offered discounted flights, accommodation and cruises.
People can join the register by visiting www.donotcall.gov.au or calling 1300 792 958
