14 JUN: A ‘mutiny’ by some 500 tourist boat operators has delayed implementation of new safety laws on Vietnam’s Halong Bay.
The laws were due to take effect on Friday.
But boat-owners said they hadn’t been given time to prepare for the changes, which will involve considerable expense for some.
They refused to operate sailings at one of the country’s prime tourist attractions.
Boats were back on the water on Saturday after authorities agreed to delay implementation till 10 September.
The new laws are a response to a disaster in February, when a boat sank overnight at its moorings, drowning 11 tourists.
