10 JUN: Columns of ash from Chile’s erupting Puyehue volcano forced all flights from the two largest airports in Argentina’s capital Buenos Aires to be grounded yesterday, according to reports this morning.
Flights had been cancelled for much of Tuesday in and out of Buenos Aires, but resumed on Wednesday.
"All flights have been cancelled because the ash cloud is above Buenos Aires," a spokesperson for Aeropuertos Argentinos 2000, the group that manages the area airports, told news agency AFP.
A crisis committee was to meet later in the day to evaluate the situation, said the spokesperson, adding that the ash cloud was about 9000 metres above the capital.
A fine coat of ash reportedly blanketed Buenos Aires yesterday.
