2 JUN: One of NZ’s top skifields has delayed its 2011 opening because of warm weather.
Coronet Peak outside Queenstown had planned to open this Saturday.
But an average temperature for May of 13.1C, well above a 2007 record average of 12.4C, has made it too warm to create artificial snow.
"We’ve invested millions of dollars in snowmaking equipment, but if we can get 72 hours of minus 2 degrees up on the mountain, which is not unheard of this time of the year, then we can be operational", Coronet Peak sales and marketing gm Craig Douglas told media.
Coronet Peak’s owner, NZ Ski, also owns Mt Hutt, which is due to open on 11 June, and The Remarkables, due open 18 June.
