Air traveller had 18 monkeys in his girdle

22 July: An airline passenger with a suspicious bulge in his T-shirt at Mexico City airport was found to be carrying 18 endangered monkeys in a girdle strapped to his body.

The tiny creatures were concealed in pouches in the girdle. Two were dead.

Robert Sol Cabrera, a 38-year-old Mexican, bought the Titi monkeys in Peru and smuggled them on to a flight from Lima.

He told officials he’d been carrying them in a suitcase, but transferred them to the girdle to protect them from airport X-ray scanners.

He’s been charged with trafficking an endangered species.
