23 JULY: A traveller ran off in his socks from a checkpoint at New York’s JFK airport after an X-ray machine spotted a loaded gun in his luggage.
Antonio Almonte, 31, described by the New York Post newspaper as a dopey ex-convict, had already taken off his sneakers as part of the screening process for a flight to Puerto Rico.
When a security officer asked him about the gun, he swore and bolted through the terminal, leaving behind the footwear and his wallet.
He later surrendered, but a report doesn’t mention what charges he faces.
