Australians die in Peru

Two elderly Australian tourists have drowned while canoeing on a swollen river in Peru, news agency AFP reports this morning.

The two were with a group of other tourists when they fell into the water in the Cusco region near the Machu Picchu ruins, which remain closed to travellers after February flooding.

The report says that the company operating the canoeing expedition apparently failed to heed a call by authorities to all boating services to suspend operations in the wake of heavy rain.

Travel advice updated

Australian Foreign Affairs has reissued its travel advisory for Madagascar, adding to earlier warnings about security and safety.

The new advice deals with civil unrest, politcal tension and crime, specifically carjackings and theft from vehicles.

The overall level of advice, which suggests that Australians reconsider the need to travel to Madagascar at this time, has not changed.

Foreign Affairs has also updated its Honduras travel advisory, adding information about civil unrest and political tension following the swearing-in of a new government.

But the overall warning level has decreased.

Agents hit the rails

Retail group TravelManagers says rail travel is becoming "incredibly trendy" and believes it will be a strong seller for the network this year.

The comment comes as staff from seven locations in NSW, Victoria and Queensland head to Darwin for a two-night journey to Adelaide on the Ghan.

The seven have become accredited Great Southern Rail specialists after achieving a 90% examination pass rate.

Pru Gallagher from TravelManagers national partnership office says another four exclusive famils are in the pipeline and there’ll be 23 travel managers on educationals with suppliers in the first months of this year.

Airport tattoo furphy

A British Royal Marine has won an apology from Heathrow airport management after being told by a security checkpoint employee that he had to cover his "offensive" tattoo before boarding a flight.

In fact, the dagger insignia represented the regimental badge of the 539 Assault Squadron, and the wearer, Paul Fairclough, had served in Kosovo and Iraq.

He explained to the security worker what it meant, but she said it must be covered, regardless.

He later took the matter up with airport authorities and reportedly was told: "This should never have happened. We have no policy against tattoos".

CO expands paperless boarding

Continental Airlines has expanded its mobile boarding pass system to London Heathrow, claiming to be the first carrier to offer paperless boarding for non-stop-flights to the US ex the UK.

Passengers can receive passes on mobile phones or PDAs for scanning and validation at security checkpoints and boarding gates.

Passes display a two-dimensional bar code, along with passenger and flight information, which can’t be manipulated or duplicated.
