Cook Islands has big plans

Cook Islands tourism promoters have big plans for the Australian market.

They want to see the number of Aussie visitors doubling over the next 18 months, from a current 12,000 or so a year to between 20,000 and 25,000.

Thomas Koteka, a Cook Islands Tourism board member and Pacific Resort general manager told Travel Monitor last night that the nation is to some extent pinning its hopes for an Australian surge on the new Air New Zealand direct Sunday flight from Sydney to Rarotonga.

He says that with promotion of the service barely under way, the flights are already attracting 35-40% of the number of passengers needed to ensure its success.
