Jess Dally-Butler is a personal trainer at Fitness First who specialises in using weights to help her clients feel strong and confident.
Having seen and experienced the obsession with the number on the scales, she decided it was time to help people shift their focus to the number on the bar instead! Jess believes getting stronger increases confidence not only in the gym but also in day-to-day life.
Following COVID gym closures, she noticed that many of her clients were struggling to find motivation to get back into the gym.
“Lockdown was a really strange time for everyone and some of my clients were finding they struggled to keep up with their routines at home, including myself” she said.
“When gyms opened again, it wasn’t as straightforward as we expected to just jump back into our pre-lockdown routines. I found most people pushed themselves too much or had set such high expectations of themselves.”
“These five tips are really achievable for post-lockdown, post-baby or just anyone who needs a little extra inspo to get back to the gym.”
1. Treat Yo Self
Buy a new gym outfit! Nothing gets you more excited than putting on a brand-new outfit. I would highly recommend getting yourself a matching set, especially if you haven’t before. That shit brings about a confidence that’s truly magical. Cotton on Body is great for this!
2. Start small
After a significant break from regular exercise, it’s completely normal to have lost some fitness. Don’t beat yourself up about it. Instead start with small goals and build from there. Yoga is always a good one to start with, as our bodies will appreciate a nice stretch and some gentle movement, especially after working from home. Classes like Cycle, Athletic or HIIT are also great as you can adjust the intensity yourself.
3. Book in for something fun!
Book yourself in for a class that you love or a session with your favourite PT. You don’t have to think about what you are going to do, and you know you are going to have fun so it’s extra incentive!
4. Take a buddy
Hit up a friend or someone you know to go along with – this gives you extra accountability to show up (mentally and physically) plus makes it a social event that will inevitably turn into coffee and brunch afterwards. Win win!
5. It’s not you, it’s me
At the end of the day, if you are really struggling with the thought of going back to the gym then maybe it’s time to break up with your old goals and try a new goal. Redirecting your focus to something different can get you excited again. Maybe it’s time to sign up for a new challenge or try strength training, boxing or handstand/mobility training!
