A group of eight Australian travel agents recently embarked on a six-day immersive tour of Portland, Oregon, experiencing the city’s dynamic culture and the natural beauty of its neighbouring regions.
Led by Rebecca George, ANZ Trade Manager for Travel Portland, the itinerary showcased both iconic landmarks and hidden gems, providing the agents with firsthand insights into what makes Portland a unique destination.
A deep dive into Portland’s eclectic neighbourhoods
Upon arrival at the newly redesigned Portland International Airport (PDX), the agents were introduced to the city’s commitment to sustainability and innovative design. Their exploration included visits to various cultural spaces, sampling the diverse culinary scene—highlighted by the renowned food carts—and indulging in tax-free shopping at local designer and vintage outlets. The group also enjoyed the tranquility of Portland’s extensive green spaces, including the famed Japanese Garden.
An evening at a Portland Timbers soccer match offered a taste of the city’s vibrant sports culture, complete with the energetic atmosphere created by fans and the team’s mascot, “Timber Joey”.

Venturing beyond the city limits
The itinerary extended to the scenic landscapes surrounding Portland. The agents visited Mt Hood, known for its ski fields, and the Columbia River Gorge, offering breathtaking views and outdoor activities. A trip to the Tualatin Valley allowed for wine tasting at some of Oregon’s esteemed cellar doors, showcasing the region’s rich viticultural offerings.
Distinctive accommodations reflecting Portland’s charm
Accommodation for the group included stays at two notable hotels. The newly opened Cascada in the Alberta district provided an urban oasis with a thermal spa, offering treatments, saunas, and steam rooms. In downtown Portland, the Sentinel Hotel, a national historic landmark dating back to 1909, offered a blend of classic architecture and modern amenities.
