Arcadia Expeditions has launched a unique tour to Iran for 2022/23 – End of Empire – Alexander v the Persians – led by renowned archaeologist Dr John Tidmarsh.
The expedition tells the incredible story of Alexander the Great’s conquest of Persia as travellers explore the iconic highlights of Iran, immersing themselves in the country’s bazaars, food, street life and extraordinary architecture. The group is joined by leading local historians, who give exclusive access to fascinating dig sites, culminating in a world-first search for Alexander’s fabled lost city of Carmania. Limited to just 16 people, there are currently four set departures, with private departures also available across a flexible range of dates in 2022 & 2023.
About Dr John Tidmarsh
John is an accomplished archaeologist who has conducted excavations in Syria, Jordan, Greece, and Cyprus. He is currently Co-Director of the University of Sydney excavations at Pella in Jordan where he is in charge of uncovering the Hellenistic and Early Roman levels. He is also Co-Director of the Australian Mission to Jebel Khalid (Syria), a remarkable purely Hellenistic site founded by Alexander the Great. John has travelled widely in the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East and since the 1980s has led some 30 tours to Iran. His main interests are in the art, archaeology and history of Alexander the Great and the Hellenistic period in the East, and in the Islamic World.
