ATIA members return inspired from Fukushima famil

Three members of the Australian Travel Industry Association (ATIA) have returned from a four-day famil to Japan’s Fukushima Prefecture, gaining fresh insight into a region reshaping its narrative from disaster recovery to cultural revitalisation.

The visit, hosted by the Fukushima Tourism Board under its Hope Tourism program and delivered in partnership with ATIA, highlighted the prefecture’s resilience and the strength of its tourism offering for Australian travellers.

A region rebuilt with pride

Led by ATIA’s Director of Membership and Industry Affairs, Richard Taylor, the famil introduced participants to a wide range of experiences across the prefecture. ATIA members Sophie Lin (Reho Study Tours), Simone Thannhauser (Connections Travel Group) and Charisma McDonald (Global Travel Co) explored destinations that have rebuilt with determination while preserving their historical identity.

The program included visits to the Edo-period post town of Ouchi-Juku, Tsurugajo Castle and the rejuvenated fishing port of Matsukawa-ura, where traditional Hamayaki shoreside seafood barbecues have been revived by locals.

Cultural immersion and local connection

Participants also enjoyed hands-on experiences such as dressing in full Samurai armour at the Meijo-kan Armour Experience, sampling wine at Tomioka Winery and craft beer at Haccoba Brewery, and joining Fukushima tourism operators for a lively exchange dinner in Iwaki City. The famil even attracted local television coverage, underscoring community pride in welcoming international partners back to the region.

ATIA says the initiative supports its strategic goal of offering members practical, high-value learning opportunities while strengthening direct relationships with global destinations.

Growing Australian interest beyond Japan’s hotspots

The partnership between ATIA and Fukushima reflects a growing appetite among Australian travellers for authentic experiences beyond Japan’s major cities. Fukushima’s combination of heritage, cuisine, nature and warm hospitality is increasingly resonating with travellers seeking deeper cultural connection.
