New research from Insure&Go reveals that nearly half of Australians are planning ‘do nothing’ holidays in 2025, with beach escapes leading the way.
The survey of 1,006 Australians highlights a shift in travel priorities, with 46 per cent preferring holidays focused on unwinding over sightseeing or event-driven trips.
Beach and resort getaways are set to dominate travel plans, with 30 per cent of respondents favouring these destinations for their next escape. The research also shows a growing willingness to invest in relaxation, with 42 per cent of Australians saying they would spend more on trips designed purely for leisure.
David Mayo, Director of Commercial and Marketing at Insure&Go, attributes this trend to the fast-paced nature of modern life.
“The beach offers a rare chance to disconnect and recharge. Australians are increasingly prioritising their mental well-being by choosing holidays that provide balance and connection with loved ones,” Mayo says.
Sightseeing and event travel still popular
While relaxation leads the pack, 39 per cent of Australians are still keen on sightseeing holidays, particularly among over-65s who are drawn to cultural and historical experiences.
Event-driven travel, such as family gatherings, sports matches, or concerts, remains popular with younger demographics. Nearly 30 per cent of travellers aged 25-34 cite event-based trips as a priority, reflecting life stages and commitments like weddings and work events.
Blending leisure with purpose
The survey reveals a rising trend of combining purpose and leisure. For those travelling for events, 38 per cent plan to extend their trips by 2-3 days for relaxation, with others adding up to a week. This flexibility, driven by hybrid work arrangements, allows travellers to maximise their time away.
As international travel rebounds to pre-pandemic levels, Australians are showing renewed enthusiasm for getaways that prioritise well-being. Whether it’s a beach retreat or a sightseeing tour, 2025 promises a diverse mix of travel experiences tailored to unwind, explore, or celebrate.
