Australian travel to Chile is accelerating sharply, with arrivals climbing 80.1 per cent year-on-year in the first half of 2026, creating fresh opportunities for travel advisors and operators selling Patagonia and adventure-focused Latin American itineraries.
Chile recorded 34,695 Australian visitors between January and June 2026, following a 26.2 per cent increase in Australian arrivals across 2025. The performance stands out against softer overall international arrivals to Chile, according to tourism figures cited in the release.
Visa change supports Australian demand
The removal of visa requirements for Australian passport holders in late 2025 has helped support demand, reducing a barrier to travel as Australians increasingly look towards Chile for nature, adventure and longer-haul experiential holidays.
For travel sellers, the growth provides an opportunity to position Chile beyond a single-destination Patagonia itinerary, particularly for clients prepared to spend longer exploring South America.
Rebeca Espinoza, Director of Unique Latin America, said the figures reflected demand already being seen in the Australian market.
“Australian travellers are increasingly looking beyond the traditional destinations and seeking extraordinary nature, authentic experiences and meaningful adventure,” Espinoza said.
Patagonia leads Chile’s appeal
Patagonia remains a major drawcard for Australian visitors, with trekking, wildlife, fjords, glaciers and luxury wilderness lodges supporting its appeal across both adventure and high-end travel segments.
However, Australian itineraries are increasingly extending into other parts of Chile, including the Atacama Desert, Lake District, ski areas and wine regions. Activities such as kayaking, cycling, rafting and mountain expeditions are also widening the destination’s potential for active and soft-adventure clients.
Chile is also strengthening standards and safety regulations for adventure tourism operators, an important consideration for advisors booking clients into more active and remote experiences.
Opportunity grows for Australian travel trade
The sharp increase in Australian arrivals gives travel advisors and tour operators another reason to broaden their Latin America offering, particularly for clients seeking combinations of nature, luxury and adventure.
With easier entry requirements and Australian visitation continuing to rise, Chile has an opportunity to build on Patagonia’s profile while encouraging travellers to explore more of the country.
