Australia’s alpine resorts have launched into winter 2025 with a burst of fresh snowfall and strong early-season openings, marking a welcome turnaround after several lacklustre seasons.
Following a snowstorm that blanketed the high country over the weekend, major ski resorts including Falls Creek, Mt Buller, Hotham, Perisher and Thredbo all opened on Saturday 7 June. Conditions have remained favourable with more snow falling since the weekend and further accumulations forecast.
Resorts across NSW and Victoria open with strong snowfalls
Perisher, Australia’s largest ski resort, reported over 65 centimetres of snowfall and opened three lifts on Saturday, with snowmaking in full swing. Hotham recorded 62 centimetres and is now operating five lifts across 11 trails.
Falls Creek has seen 63 centimetres of fresh snow, adding two more lifts and opening its first intermediate terrain for the season. Mt Buller opened three lifts after a 30-centimetre snowfall, with resort spokesperson Rhylla Morgan calling it “a dream start to the snow season” and noting “the buzz around the mountain is wonderful.”
Thredbo is currently running three lifts serving four trails, sitting on a solid base depth of approximately 25 inches.
More resorts to follow as snow continues
Additional Australian ski fields are expected to join the season launch this coming weekend and next, with continued snowfall building anticipation.
Across the Tasman, New Zealand’s ski fields have also been hit by significant snow. Mt Hutt is leading the charge, set to open on Friday 13 June after receiving nearly 100 centimetres in the past week alone – part of a total season snowfall of 246 centimetres. Cardrona, The Remarkables and Coronet Peak are scheduled to open on Saturday 14 June, with Treble Cone following on 28 June.
