Australian and New Zealand travellers are increasingly choosing experience-led holidays closer to home, with Indonesia, Japan, Fiji, Vietnam and Cambodia emerging as the standout destinations for 2026, according to new insights from Plateau International.
The luxury sales representation company said economic, social and environmental uncertainty is driving demand for immersive, culturally rich travel experiences in accessible Asia-Pacific destinations.
Experience-led travel shapes booking trends

Plateau International Founder and Managing Director Marco Rosa said travellers were continuing to prioritise authentic experiences while investing in premium travel products.
The report identifies Indonesia as a leading destination, with repeat visitors venturing beyond Bali, while Japan is evolving into a year-round destination as travellers explore lesser-known regions outside the traditional cherry blossom and ski seasons.
Luxury and slow travel gain momentum

Fiji continues to attract demand for luxury short-haul holidays, particularly among families and multi-generational groups, while Vietnam and Cambodia are benefiting from growing interest in river cruising and slow travel experiences.
Plateau said the trends present opportunities for travel advisors to broaden their offerings through boutique accommodation, tailored itineraries and specialist destination management companies across the region.
