Where some types of cruises are more about cocktails and sunsets, expedition cruising has always been about immersion, information and education. HX Expeditions, the trailblazers of expedition cruising, have upped the ante for passengers keen to learn more about the destinations they visit. In partnership with the University of Tasmania (UTAS) and its Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS), HX will expand its pioneering travel education program from the southernmost latitudes to the far reaches of the Arctic. It’s a move that fuses adventure with academia, right in HX’s 130th anniversary year.
From Antarctica to the Arctic, education goes global
HX and UTAS made waves in 2024 with their Antarctica Pre-Departure Course, the first university-developed program designed for Antarctic travellers. It kicked off with a free introductory course, then ramped up with an advanced module offering a deeper dive into Antarctic science and sustainability. The numbers speak for themselves: 933 guests have already completed the program, which reflects the growing thirst for educational travel.
Now, the partnership is stretching from pole-to-pole. Starting in 2026, HX will roll out new Arctic Introductory Courses covering Alaska, Arctic Canada, Greenland, Iceland, the Northwest Passage, and Svalbard, the very place HX pioneered expedition cruising back in 1896. It’s all about delivering destination-specific learning, tailored for each unique polar environment.
Flexible pre-departure learning is online and interactive
Behind the scenes, UTAS and IMAS academics are working hand-in-hand with HX’s Chief Scientist, Dr Verena Meraldi, to shape these new courses. Expect flexible, online modules packed with interactive content, live sessions, and insights from polar experts. Additional collaborations with other universities will bring even more depth, especially for the location-specific elements.
Each Arctic course will cover an essential overview, ecosystem primer, iconic species, and responsible tourism. It’s immersive learning you can access from anywhere, setting the scene before you even pack your bags.
Complete the course, and you’ll earn a certificate straight from the University of Tasmania. It’s a badge of honour that comes with unique bragging rights, reflecting a genuine commitment to understanding the wonders of the polar regions.
