Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, has confirmed the tourism sector’s support for a coordinated government response following Cabinet’s declaration of the country’s HIV outbreak as a national crisis.
Health Ministry to lead response, tourism continues as normal
The Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation, the Tourism Action Group and Tourism Fiji said they are aware of public health discussions concerning rising HIV cases and related drug use issues in Fiji, and are coordinating closely with the Ministry of Health and Medical Services, which remains the lead agency managing the response. Any tourism sector communications will be coordinated through the Tourism Action Group.
Gavoka said the sector would follow official health guidance while continuing normal operations.
“Fiji’s HIV response is a public health matter led by the Ministry of Health and Medical Services, and the tourism sector will support the response, guided by its advice,” Gavoka said.
“The tourism industry continues to operate normally, with a record number of visitors enjoying the warmth and friendliness for which Fiji is renowned.”
Fiji remains open to international visitors, with tourism services continuing to operate as usual. Tourism stakeholders said they would continue monitoring developments closely to ensure information provided to operators, industry partners and visitors remains accurate and consistent with official public health advice.
Travellers and members of the public seeking information on HIV transmission, prevention, testing and treatment are directed to advisories issued by Fiji’s Ministry of Health and Medical Services.
