First Dallas-Fort Worth to Brisbane flight makes aviation history

Excitement was soaring as the inaugural American Airlines direct flight from Dallas-Fort Worth to Brisbane prepared for its historic touchdown this morning.

The 15-hour flight, left Texas around 10 pm local time, and reached Brisbane at approximately 5:30 am, marking the longest flight by distance in American Airlines’ network and Brisbane Airport’s longest route.

This daily direct route, initially announced in February, promises significant tourism and economic boosts for Queensland. With projections of over 141,000 seats added to Queensland’s tourism capacity over the next three years, the state government estimates the route will inject $113 million into the local economy. Queensland’s former Treasurer Cameron Dick celebrated the achievement, highlighting the route’s potential to attract North American travellers during peak winter months, bolstering local businesses’ visibility across Texas and the wider United States.

Brisbane Airport CEO Gert-Jan de Graaff emphasised the route’s importance, stating, “The Dallas-Fort Worth hub opens a world of options for travellers across North, Central, and South America.” The route strengthens Brisbane’s international connectivity, adding it as the city’s fourth gateway into North America, alongside Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Vancouver.

The flight, serviced by a 244-seat Boeing 787-900 capable of carrying 18 tonnes of freight, also marks a new chapter for Queensland’s export industry, unlocking direct opportunities to the USA. To commemorate this milestone, Brisbane Airport had a unique broadcast of the landing, with cameras positioned along the runway and taxiway to capture every moment of the historic arrival.

“Airport livestreaming has gained global popularity,” Brisbane Airport’s communications manager, Peter Doherty, noted. “We have a surprise planned for the inaugural arrival that will set this show apart in the airport livestreaming world.”

The highly anticipated broadcast will be accessible through Brisbane Airport’s YouTube channel for all to witness this landmark event for Australian and North American air travel.
