Skål International Sydney is hosting its November lunch at the iconic Orient Hotel in George Street, The Rocks on Remembrance Day – 11 November – with special guest speaker Gil McLachlan, CEO of the McLachlan Travel Group.
The family business first began organising holidays in 1979, when Gil and Leonie opened a small travel agency in West Wyalong, a town of 2500 people in the NSW wheatbelt. Since then, the business has operated numerous retail travel offices, published travel magazines, was a pioneer of online travel in Australia, and was the first travel business in the world appointed by Sir Richard Branson to sell Virgin Galactic space travel. Gil headed up all national marketing for Harvey World Travel in Australia, New Zealand and Southern Africa, at a time who Harvey World had the highest unprompted brand awareness in the travel industry.
Their daughter Lisa moved from pathology to head up MTG’s premium travel business, has won numerous awards and been nominated by Virtuoso as their Most Admired Advisor. Their son Mat moved from journalism to become one of Australia’s most prominent military historians and is the driver of the company’s battlefield tour division.
The business presently operates a branded helloworld office in Wagga, a premium off-street travel agency in Manly and is the Australian GSA for Amadeus River Cruises. Its touring division, Mat McLachlan Battlefield Tours, operates military history tours worldwide.
