Hotel Review: Coronet Ridge Resort, Queenstown

Perched high above Shotover River with panoramic views across to the surrounding mountains, Coronet Ridge Resort offers a peaceful alpine retreat just a short drive to the heart of Queenstown. While Queenstown is known for its bustling adventure scene, this boutique property provides a welcome sense of calm, allowing guests to escape the crowds without sacrificing convenience. Whether you’re visiting for a ski holiday, a romantic getaway or simply to enjoy the region’s spectacular scenery, Coronet Ridge delivers comfort, space and unforgettable views.

With only a small collection of luxury rooms and suites, the resort has an intimate feel, making it ideal for travellers looking for privacy and personalised service. Every angle of the property showcases the surrounding mountains, reminding you why Queenstown is considered one of New Zealand’s most beautiful destinations.

Stay

I stayed in a Superior Shotover View Room and as the name suggests, offered stunning views of the Shotover River. It immediately felt more like a private alpine residence than a hotel suite. Spacious at 35sqm, this room features a super king bed, a deep bathtub in the ensuite, luxurious bathroom amenities, a delightful coffee and tea station with relaxing and herbal teas and a mini-bar stocked with some complimentary goodies.

The contemporary and beautifully designed villa made the most of its elevated position with floor-to-ceiling windows that captured uninterrupted views across the river and the surrounding mountains. The open-plan living area featured comfortable lounges, and this continued to the outdoor balcony with lounge-style chairs that provided the perfect setting for relaxing with a cup of tea and reading a book.

What I found extra special was the Manuka & Lavender spray next to the bed that further enhanced the restful night’s sleep. A little touch of luxury wellness.

Coronet Ridge offers a selection of rooms, suites, two-bedroom suites and even accessible rooms, making it suitable for couples, families or groups travelling together. Every room and suite includes modern conveniences such as complimentary Wi-Fi, smart televisions and secure parking, while maintaining a sophisticated yet welcoming alpine style.

Eat

Dining at Coronet Ridge is centred around Elevation Restaurant, an intimate dining destination that celebrates the spectacular alpine setting as much as the cuisine itself. With floor-to-ceiling windows framing panoramic views across the Shotover River, every meal is accompanied by one of Queenstown’s most breathtaking backdrops. The atmosphere is warm (literally due to the cosy fireplace) and sophisticated, making it equally suited to a leisurely breakfast, long lunch or romantic dinner.

Breakfast is served daily with a selection of continental favourites alongside cooked-to-order dishes, making it the perfect way to fuel up before a day on the ski slopes, hiking the mountains or exploring Queenstown. I enjoyed a generous cooked breakfast paired with freshly brewed coffee while watching the morning light spill across the mountains – a memorable start to the day.

For lunch and dinner, Elevation showcases the best of New Zealand’s seasonal produce with a menu inspired by the region. Executive Chef Dominic Dsouza brings an impressive international pedigree, blending classical French technique with premium New Zealand ingredients. Expect premium local meats, fresh seafood, and vibrant vegetables, all complemented by an extensive wine list featuring some of Central Otago’s finest vineyards. During my visit, dinner was a standout, with beautifully presented dishes that looked too pretty to eat and allowed quality local ingredients to shine, matched perfectly with a local pinot noir (or three).

The restaurant also features a relaxed bar, making it an ideal place to unwind with a pre-dinner drink or enjoy a nightcap beside the fire after a day of adventure. Whether you’re staying at the resort or simply looking for a memorable dining experience with exceptional views, Elevation Restaurant is a destination in its own right.

Spa & wellness

One of the highlights of staying at Coronet Ridge is the opportunity to completely unwind at the on-site spa. Its design will set you straight into a Roman bathhouse, with gorgeous floor-to-ceiling marble, centred by a huge indoor heated pool and quirky marble pillars with basins. There is even a giant marble bath and mosaic tiled shower area.

Continuing with the epic views, the floor-to-ceiling glass provides that familiar view of the Shotover River and the surrounding mountains. The spa offers a tranquil escape where relaxation comes naturally. Whether you’re easing tired muscles after a day on the ski slopes, recovering from a hike, or simply indulging in some well-deserved self-care, the spa provides a calming sanctuary away from the bustle of Queenstown.

The treatment menu features a range of therapeutic and relaxation massages, rejuvenating facials, and body treatments tailored to individual needs. Guests can also enjoy the resort’s outdoor hot pools, where you can soak in warm water while taking in uninterrupted views. It’s the perfect way to end an active day, particularly as the sun sets over the mountains or the stars begin to appear. The combination of luxury treatments, peaceful surroundings, and spectacular scenery makes the spa one of Coronet Ridge’s standout experiences.

Activities

Coronet Ridge is perfectly positioned to experience everything Queenstown has to offer year-round. During winter, Coronet Peak Ski Area is only a short drive away, while summer brings endless hiking and mountain biking opportunities through nearby trails.

Adventure seekers can enjoy jet boating, bungy jumping, skydiving and scenic helicopter flights, while those preferring a slower pace can cruise Lake Wakatipu, visit the historic town of Arrowtown or spend the day exploring the renowned wineries of Gibbston Valley.

The resort’s concierge can assist with arranging activities, ensuring guests can tailor their Queenstown itinerary to suit every style of traveller.

Facilities

Coronet Ridge focuses on providing luxury accommodation rather than extensive resort facilities, allowing the spectacular natural surroundings to take centre stage. Guests benefit from secure parking, complimentary Wi-Fi, beautifully landscaped grounds and attentive personalised service throughout their stay.

The resort’s elevated location offers one of its greatest assets, with expansive outdoor terraces providing breathtaking views from sunrise through to the evening alpenglow across the mountains. It’s the perfect place to unwind with a glass of Central Otago pinot noir after a day of adventure.

Hotel rewards

Coronet Ridge Resort is an independently owned boutique property and is not affiliated with a major international hotel loyalty program. Instead, its appeal lies in its exclusive atmosphere, spacious luxury villas and personalised hospitality that creates a truly memorable Queenstown experience.

Hot tip

Make sure you book a room with a view over Shotover River, it is well worth it. Watching the sun set behind the mountains with uninterrupted river views is one of the most memorable experiences the resort has to offer.
