Hotel Review: Moxy Sydney Airport

Moxy, the Gen Z child of Marriott Bonvoy, is the antithesis of airport hotels. Not merely a comfortable place in which to crash between flights within cooee of the airport, it’s a café, bar, rumpus room, business lounge, library and corner shop rolled into one.

The funky retro décor immediately screams “FUN”, but it’s the attention to detail that really impresses. There are curiosities in every corner, from 1960s movie projectors and typewriters to vinyl collections, turntables, cameras and telephones with dials.

I’m welcomed with a signature cocktail, a rosé spritzer with raspberry and watermelon infused sparkling water which I enjoy in the lounge watching a wall of rolling Instagram posts from other Moxy’s around the world.

Beyond the bar and café, there’s a lounge area which is half business lounge, half rumpus room, with chess boards, books, board games – giant Connect 4 and Jengo – there’s even a Skee ball machine.

About the Hotel

Moxy Sydney Airport has got all the facilities required of a digital nomad, including superfast free WIFI, whilst being family friendly. Wherever there’s a bar or a table to plonk your laptop, there’s a convenient charging station, barista-made coffee a few feet away and conference rooms.

With a shuttle service to the airport and airport stations, it’s also a convenient stopover hotel, with easy access to the city’s attractions, all within a 15-minute Uber or train ride away. Or you can borrow one of the hotels pushbikes and take the cycle path into town.

Rooms

I stayed in a Moxy Queen Sleeper, a room that is compact and spacious at the same time, with very clever space-saving design features, including a sliding door to the bathroom (why don’t ALL hotels have sliding bathroom doors?) and a narrow but long basin and bench, shelves underneath, with plenty of space to store toiletries.

Speaking of toiletries, there are dispensers in the large walk-in shower with divine-smelling bergamot and tea tree shampoo and conditioner, grapefruit and mint shower gel.

Eclectic little artworks share space on the walls with mirrors and hanging on hooks, fold-up chairs and a small table. Hooks and coat hangers with leather straps replace bulky (and usually little-used) wardrobes. A jug and glasses are placed by the sink, with chilled water fountains in the hall on each floor for convenient refills.

Other room types include the quad king single bunk rooms, fantastic for groups of friends and families, the Loft Room (also good for small families) and King Sleepers, which are larger and include a generous desk space – great for business travellers and digital nomads.

Dining

The bar doubles as front office and sits in between Little Baxter café and dining area, with the kitchen and breakfast buffet at the rear. The breakfast buffet is open from 6 to 10 AM, a selection of hot and cold offerings, with fresh fruit and a selection of juices. Help yourself to a selection of teas and filter coffee at the bar or order a cappuccino at Little Baxter Café.

There is a lunch and dinner menu, a mix of Sydney favourites including burgers, salads and pasta, which can be ordered at the bar, and in between these dining times, you can order from a range of snacks including toasted sandwiches from Little Baxter Café, or pick something up from the Grab & Go shop.

Top Tip

Don’t bother about a late check out time, just chill (or work) in the lounge if you have a few hours before your flight. Kids won’t be bored either, with plenty to keep them occupied.
