Located in Sydney’s Ultimo, where student accommodation meets inner-west urban living, the atmosphere at Veriu Broadway is a blend of industrial-grunge (being a converted warehouse), and inner-city chic.
First Impressions
Veriu Broadway’s reception area is more café than lobby, furnished with an eclectic mix of stylish retro armchairs and coffee tables, a barista at the counter to welcome you with a fresh brew and a selection of freshly baked pastries.
The walls, half exposed brick and rendered cement, decorated with an equally eclectic mix of artwork, from a 17th century portrait to hanging plants, hurricane lanterns, architectural photography and bicycles.
Location
On a side street off one of the Sydney’s main arteries, Broadway, the tall white 1900s building is a short walk from Central Station, handy for exploring nearby Chinatown, Chippendale, Glebe, Camperdown and Newtown neighbourhoods.
Rooms
Launched in 2017, Veriu Broadway has 64 rooms and suites in a converted textile and fashion warehouse and former tannery. Rooms start at 32 square metres, with self-contained studios, and one- and two-bedroom, split-level loft-style apartments, including the top-tier Skyline Suite at 60 square metres with a large balcony. Minimalist decor mixes white, wood and raw surfaces, with creative spots for lounging, dining, working and storage.
The balcony has an almost Parisian feel to it, with the eaves of the roof curving over to each side, and a rooftop view of the surrounding neighbourhood.
Rooms have a minibar, espresso machine, kitchen and washer dryer and free wifi, so it’s a home-away-from-home for those that like AirBNB-style accommodation. In fact, you can even add a breakfast or fruit and vegetable box to your room booking.
Dining
Veriu’s café/bar/lobby serves up a selection of pastries and delicious design-it-yourself Gruyere cheese toasties in the mornings and in the evening, the café is transformed into a cosy wine bar, serving a selection of local wine and craft beer, and guests are invited to join the hotel’s host for Happy Hour drinks between 5:00 and 6:00pm.
Room service is provided by Deliveroo, with an in-room dining menu detailing nearby eateries to choose from, which includes such delights as pasta or pizza from Macchiato Italian, Sydney’s best Thai food from Spice I Am, Mexican food from Guzman Y Gomez, Taiwanese dumplings from Din Tai Fung and gelato from Messina.
Explore
Leave the car in nearby secure parking for only $35 per night and use Veriu’s free Lekker bicycles to explore the neighbourhood. To explore Sydney further, grab a train or light rail in pretty much any direction from Central Station.
The hotel is not far from the starting point of the Goods Line, an urban walkway that leads from Central Station to Darling Harbour along a disused freight railway line. A cross between walkway and public park, you’ll past some historic sites and otherwise interesting architectural feats including the striking UTS Dr Chau Chak Wing, designed by Canadian architect Frank Gehry.
Walk across Broadway towards Chippendale to explore the cobbled laneways of the Kensington Street district, where you’ll find a wide variety of street food in Spice Alley, small bars including Gin Lane and Handpicked Cellar Door and the KOI Dessert Bar.
