HX and University of Tasmania launch free Svalbard course

HX Expeditions has partnered with the University of Tasmania (UTAS) to launch a free online educational course about Svalbard, expanding its pre-departure learning program for guests as the expedition cruise company celebrates 130 years since its first voyage to the Arctic archipelago.

The new HX + UTAS Svalbard Course is designed to give guests a deeper understanding of Svalbard’s wildlife, ecosystems, history and principles of responsible exploration before they travel. Participants who complete the course will receive a joint UTAS and HX Certificate of Attendance.

Building on Antarctica education success

The launch follows the success of HX and UTAS’ Antarctica pre-departure course and the introduction of other Arctic destination-specific learning programs. The initiative forms part of HX’s broader strategy to combine expedition cruising with science and education through university-backed learning experiences.

The timing coincides with a significant anniversary for the company, commemorating 130 years since its inaugural guest voyage to Svalbard in 1896, a journey that included scientists, biologists and travellers eager to learn about the Arctic.

Continuing a legacy of exploration

HX Chief Scientist Verena Meraldi said the new course reflected the company’s long-standing commitment to pairing exploration with education.

“The timing of the Svalbard course launch is particularly significant. This week, HX commemorates 130 years since its first guest voyage to Svalbard in 1896 – a pioneering journey that helped establish expedition travel in the Arctic,” Meraldi said.

“That first voyage was also attended by scientists, biologists and guests who wanted to learn more – so it feels fitting to launch the educational programme this week. More than a century later, we continue to evolve that legacy by pairing exploration with science, learning and responsible travel.”

HX, founded in 1896, is the world’s longest-running expedition cruise company and operates five ships to more than 250 destinations across 30 countries. The company has also built a reputation for responsible tourism through initiatives including hybrid-powered expedition ships and support for scientific research.
