HX Expeditions completes MS Spitsbergen refurbishment

HX Expeditions has completed a major refurbishment to MS Spitsbergen as part of the expedition cruise company’s plans to increase comfort, accessibility and operational efficiency across its fleet.

The upgrades to MS Spitsbergen includes enhanced guest spaces, a new bistro, a state-of-the-art science centre and a refreshed exterior featuring HX’s updated Indigo Blue and Sand livery. The €7 million investment also covers improvements to the sister ship, MS Fram, focusing on comfort, accessibility, and operational efficiency.

New dining experience: Brygga Bistro

The refurbished MS Spitsbergen now features Brygga Bistro, an informal dining concept on Deck 5. The restaurant is part of HX’s fleetwide all-inclusive dining offering introduced in late 2024. This brasserie-style venue serves high-quality snacks and light meals three times a day, providing guests with a relaxed dining alternative between shore excursions. Menu highlights include salads, gourmet sandwiches, warm evening plates along with freshly brewed coffee. Table service is included in a relaxed, welcoming setting.

New Science Centre and guest engagement

The new Science Centre on Deck 6 enhances the onboard experience by promoting hands-on learning and discovery. It includes interactive screens, flexible lecture spaces, and workstations for citizen science, reflecting HX’s commitment to education. The centre aims to deepen the impact of scientific research, with guests encouraged to participate in citizen science projects onboard.

“Last year alone, our program supported 32 research projects, 1,911 guest-scientist cruise nights, and more than 30,000 citizen science submissions,” said Dr. Verena Meraldi, HX’s Chief Scientist.

“The new Science Center aboard Spitsbergen will allow us to deepen that impact—especially around Svalbard, one of the most climate-sensitive and scientifically significant areas in the world.”

Modernised spaces and Accessibility upgrades

The Explorer Lounge & Bar with its sweeping views has been refreshed to add to the ambiance and cozy atmosphere for relaxation after excursions. Newly refurbished ADA-compliant bathrooms enhance accessibility throughout the ship and increase guest comfort. MS Spitsbergen was named after Norway’s largest island and continues to honour HX Expeditions’ legacy with all the modern conveniences expected in expedition cruising.

Additionally, crew areas and dining facilities have been expanded for improved comfort for the crew who attend to guests needs.
