IHG brings voco to the Top End with debut Darwin hotel

IHG Hotels & Resorts has announced the signing of its first-ever voco property in the Northern Territory, marking a major milestone in the group’s regional growth strategy. The 87-room voco Darwin Suites will open in late 2025 in the heart of Darwin’s Central Business District, following a partnership with local development group JH Group.

Located at 87 Mitchell Street, the new upscale hotel is ideally positioned near key city attractions such as the Darwin Entertainment Centre and Crocosaurus Cove. The project will see a commercial office building repurposed into a contemporary hotel, featuring self-contained kitchenettes in all rooms to cater to both short-stay and extended-stay guests.

Additional amenities will include an all-day dining restaurant, a fitness centre, meeting space and an outdoor pool—delivering a full-service experience with the distinct style and character for which voco is known.

A first for the Territory, a boost for Darwin

This opening marks voco’s debut in the Northern Territory and continues the rapid expansion of IHG’s fastest-growing premium brand in Australasia. The announcement follows other recent voco developments including properties in Melbourne, Auckland, Brisbane, and the upcoming voco Gosford set to launch in late 2025.

Cameron Burke, Director of Development, Australasia & Pacific at IHG, said the new property is a significant step forward for the brand’s regional footprint.

“We’re thrilled to welcome John Halikos and the JH Group to our IHG community,” said Burke.

“The voco Darwin Suites project represents the type of adaptable, upscale hospitality solution that appeals to both owners and guests. By leveraging IHG’s global systems and loyalty platform, we’re confident this new hotel will perform strongly in the Darwin market.”

Local backing with global vision

The hotel’s development is being led by the Halikos family, a well-known name in Darwin’s business community. John Halikos, of JH Group, said the project reflects the family’s commitment to local investment and community support.

“We’re excited to bring the voco brand to the Northern Territory in partnership with IHG,” said Halikos.

“Darwin has a significant need for quality new accommodation, especially in the Mitchell Street CBD. voco is the right fit for both international and domestic travellers looking for something fresh, modern and memorable.”

voco Darwin Suites will join a growing portfolio of IHG properties in Australasia, with 69 hotels currently operating across nine brands and a further 26 in the development pipeline.

The arrival of voco Darwin Suites marks a fresh chapter for Darwin’s accommodation landscape, blending international hospitality standards with local community values.
