Intrepid Travel expands European presence with largest acquisition to date

Intrepid Travel has announced its largest acquisition yet, purchasing Dutch tour operator Sawadee Reizen from Travelopia. The move strengthens Intrepid’s position in the European market and marks a significant step towards its goal of becoming an AUD 1 billion business by 2030.

The acquisition will add 20,000 customers to Intrepid’s portfolio and increase its annual revenue by approximately AUD 100 million. Sawadee Reizen is known for its immersive and sustainable small-group tours across Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas, aligning well with Intrepid’s responsible travel ethos.

Strengthening presence in non-English speaking markets

Intrepid plans to retain the Sawadee Reizen brand in the short term, leveraging its strong position in the Dutch market. The company sees this as a gateway to further expansion in non-English speaking European markets, diversifying its customer base beyond its traditional strongholds in Australia, the UK, and the U.S.

Intrepid Travel CEO James Thornton emphasised that the acquisition provides a unique opportunity to scale the business while tapping into new markets. With the Netherlands now becoming Intrepid’s fourth-largest source market, the company is poised to accelerate growth across Europe.

Following this acquisition, Intrepid is actively exploring additional opportunities in European markets with strong demand for sustainable and adventure travel. The company remains focused on its long-term vision of leading the global small-group adventure travel sector.
