With a record number of Australians heading to Japan, travel insurer Insure&Go has released eight expert travel tips and tools to help Aussies make the most of their journeys while staying safe, respectful, and well-prepared.
The advice comes as travel to Japan surged by over 50 percent in 2024, making it one of Australia’s most in-demand international destinations.
A booming destination with evolving traveller habits
Recent data reveals 920,200 Australians travelled to Japan in 2024, up from 613,062 in 2023—a 50.1 percent jump. Insure&Go’s Commercial and Marketing Director, David Mayo, attributes this rise to favourable exchange rates, more direct flights, and year-round appeal, from cherry blossoms to world-class ski resorts.
“As Japan’s popularity continues to skyrocket, many Aussies are venturing beyond the major cities and discovering the real Japan,” said Mayo.
“Travel insurance can be a safety net in this new environment, whether you’re skiing in Hokkaido, hiking Mt Fuji, or navigating Tokyo’s complex train system.”
In 2024, Japan welcomed over 36.8 million international visitors, and that number is expected to exceed 40 million in 2025. With the growing influx, some local governments have introduced tourist taxes and are encouraging travel to less-visited regions during off-peak seasons—trends that adventurous Australian travellers are beginning to embrace.
Smart travel tips from tech to cultural etiquette
Insure&Go’s list of top travel tips includes practical tools like eSIMs, Google Maps, and translation apps, as well as guidance on etiquette and documentation. These tools help travellers uncover hidden gems, communicate more effectively, and avoid cultural faux pas—important in a society that values quiet public conduct and respectful engagement.
Traveller Sarah Ewenson, who visited Japan with her family in November, praised shoulder season travel for its affordability and serenity.
“We saved money on flights and accommodation, and we discovered quiet alternatives to the usual hotspots. Kyoto’s Kamigamo Shrine was a hidden gem—we had the place to ourselves, and it was perfect for our kids to explore.”
Sarah also shared highlights from Miyajima Island, near Hiroshima, calling it “the perfect escape from the city” where her family enjoyed local seafood and mingled with friendly deer in a relaxed, scenic setting.
