Jetstar will remove its long-standing 7kg carry-on baggage weight limit from February 2027, introducing a new size-based model designed to simplify boarding and improve the customer experience.
Under the new policy, all passengers will be able to bring one underseat bag, while those requiring additional cabin baggage can purchase Priority Carry-on, which includes a second, larger bag for the overhead locker and priority boarding.
Shift to size-based carry-on model
The low-cost carrier said the move aligns its baggage policy with other leading low-fares airlines and follows customer and crew feedback identifying baggage weighing at departure gates and limited overhead locker space as key pain points.
Jetstar CEO Stephanie Tully said the change would make packing simpler while helping improve boarding efficiency.
“We know that weighing carry-on bags at the gate can be frustrating for our customers and for our crew,” Tully said.
“To make packing easier we’ve decided to remove the 7kg weight limit, so from February, the main thing customers will need to think about is the size of their carry-on.”
More choice for travellers
Jetstar said the new model is intended to make better use of overhead locker space, streamline boarding and help flights depart on time.
Passengers travelling with only an underseat bag will continue to pay the lowest fares, while those needing extra cabin baggage can add Priority Carry-on during the booking process.
The airline said the changes will take effect from February 2027.
