Journey Beyond’s major change for the Ghan in 2027

Journey Beyond Rail has opened bookings for its 2027 season, revealing a major enhancement to one of Australia’s most legendary journeys — The Ghan.

From 2027, the northbound route between Adelaide and Darwin will become a four-day, three-night experience, giving guests more time to immerse themselves in the landscapes, stories and connections of the outback.

David Donald, Executive General Manager of Rail at Journey Beyond, said the extension responds to guest demand for a slower, deeper journey through the heart of the country.

“By adding a full day to the northbound itinerary, we’re giving travellers the opportunity to connect more meaningfully with the culture, people and land that define this iconic experience,” he said.

New highlights for The Ghan’s 2027 journey

The extended journey kicks off in Adelaide with a celebratory dinner in one of South Australia’s famed wine regions. Travellers will then explore the dramatic beauty of the Flinders Ranges, recently named among Lonely Planet’s top 25 global destinations for 2026. The journey continues through Marla, Alice Springs and Katherine with immersive Off Train Experiences before concluding in Darwin’s tropical Top End.

The enhancement brings the northbound Ghan into line with its popular southbound counterpart, The Ghan Expedition, and positions it as a must-do luxury rail journey for travellers looking to experience Australia with more depth. Prices start from AUD 3,390 per person.

Great Southern packages pair rail with remote luxury

For those looking to combine coast and outback, Journey Beyond has launched two new holiday packages with sister brand Outback Spirit, extending the Great Southern summer rail journey.

The 7-day Queensland Hinterland Spectacular begins in Adelaide and travels north to Brisbane before continuing with Outback Spirit through Mount Tamborine, Lamington National Park, and a stay at Spicers Hidden Vale. From AUD 6,490 per person.

Southbound, the 8-day Spectacular Kangaroo Island journey pairs the Brisbane–Adelaide rail route with a Monarto Safari Resort overnight, followed by Outback Spirit touring on Kangaroo Island and the McLaren Vale wine region. From AUD 8,390 per person.

Donald said the 2027 program is about enriching the connection between landscape, food, and story.

“Our rail journeys have always been about more than the destination — they’re about discovery,” he said.

Aurora Australis Suites redefine rail luxury

Available across the 2027 season, the Aurora Australis Suites continue to set the benchmark for luxury on rails. Designed in partnership with acclaimed studio Woods Bagot and made in South Australia, the suites offer spacious private cabins with large picture windows, curated interiors, butler service and personalised bar experiences.

With 2026 availability already nearing sell-out, guests are encouraged to book early to secure their preferred date in 2027.

Popular City Stay packages return

Also returning in 2027 are Journey Beyond’s City Stay packages, offering curated pre- and post-rail experiences in iconic Australian cities such as Sydney, Adelaide and Perth. These add-ons include luxury hotel stays and local experiences, allowing guests to extend their journey in style.

Travellers can also book an overnight stay at Monarto Safari Resort, offering a Dawn or Dusk Safari experience and a taste of “Australia’s Wild Africa” in South Australia’s Murraylands.
