Hosted by JTB Australia, a group of Australian wholesalers and three media representatives recently embarked on an immersive famil trip to Hokkaido that revealed the region’s agricultural roots, indigenous culture and urban allure.
The itinerary was designed to connect participants with the “pulse of the land” and cultural memory of Japan’s northernmost island, while also showcasing what the destination has to offer in the green season (summer).
Tour connects travellers with Tokachi’s farming heritage
The journey began in Tokachi, known for its fertile plains and abundant harvests. Guests strolled across wide-open fields with a local guide before enjoying an evening with horses on a countryside property—a chance to sense the rhythms of rural life in harmony with nature.
Adventure days explore river life and local cuisine
The following day, participants descended a river and cycled along the Tokachi River banks, breathing in fresh air and the scent of open landscapes. Meals featured regional specialities—from farm‑to‑table lunches to a farmers’ bar dinner—with wine tasting at the Ikeda Wine Castle providing a perfect complement.
Showcasing the summer adventure activities in the region was something Pulse Travel Leisure Travel Manager Natalia Gerasimova enjoyed.
“I really enjoyed the rafting and cycling as I like active stuff, and the weather was perfect for that experience,” Natalia added.
Cultural immersion in Nibutani introduces Ainu living traditions
The tour moved on to Biratori (Nibutani), a sacred hub of Ainu heritage. Rather than only visiting museums, the group spent time with Ainu people in the Ior Forest, sharing a BBQ and participating in cultural exchange. Heartfelt moments in a traditional chise house included lunches and a craft demonstration, offering authentic insight into the Ainu’s living traditions.
Urban elegance and local flavours in Sapporo
The finale brought the travellers to Sapporo, where refined urban spaces blend with nurtured food culture. From innovative dining experiences to contemporary spaces rooted in local identity, participants experienced how Hokkaido balances nature, indigenous wisdom and modern life.
The famil trip created a one‑of‑a‑kind adventure travel experience: engaging all the senses to reveal the land’s story through food, culture and landscapes.
JTB Australia representative on the tour, Toshiya (Toshi) Yamada said the famil trip was a great success.
“The weather was good and even though it was a short period, the participants were able to see and experience a different side of Hokkaido than they would in the winter season, especially in the Tokachi region. If we have another opportunity, I would like them to visit the Kushiro Marsh.”
Ignite Product Manager of Touring, Brett Taylor, rated the Ainu Forest Walk experience, noting it was sustainable, fun and with a positive impact. Brett also noted that it was “a great opportunity to promote a Japan season without surcharges.”
Bunnik Tours Department Manager – Product, James Atwell, agreed, saying, “the Ainu experience and lunch for sure was a highlight. Engaging, informative and interactive in a beautiful setting. It is well paced and not too strenuous, so it would be a perfect inclusion to one of our tours.”
