Australian residents took fewer overnight trips in the June quarter 2026 than a year earlier, while international visitor results were also softer, according to the latest figures from Tourism Research Australia (TRA).
Day trips increased over the same period, giving a mixed domestic picture as the industry heads towards the peak summer booking season.
Day trips rise as overnight travel falls
Australian residents took 27.1 million overnight trips and 74.2 million day trips in the June quarter 2026, spending $39.5 billion.
TRA said the results were mixed compared with the June quarter 2025. Overnight trip numbers decreased, while day trips increased. The initial release did not include percentage changes.
A shift towards day trips at the expense of overnight stays has implications for accommodation providers and regional operators that rely on multi-night domestic travel.
International visitor results soften
TRA’s International Visitor Survey shows international visitors made 1.7 million trips to Australia in the June quarter 2026 and spent $7.1 billion.
TRA described international tourism results as softer than in the June quarter 2025. Detailed breakdowns by source market and state are available through TRA’s full release.
Dashboards and labour data updated
TRA has also highlighted several other updates:
- The Office of Tourism and the Visitor Economy has updated the Australian Sustainable Tourism Indicators dashboard, previously known as LIVE.
- The August edition of the Australian Tourism Data Dashboard is now available, covering domestic, international and supply-side data.
- Quarterly tourism labour statistics from the Australian Bureau of Statistics have been released, with a summary from TRA.
Tourism organisations, councils and operators can access detailed national, state and regional datasets through TRA Online.
