Marriott Bonvoy has reported a substantial rise in US traveller demand at its Melbourne hotels around the NFL’s first regular-season game at the MCG on 11 September 2026, with the US representing the largest source market for more than half its Melbourne properties on the eve of the game.
Members drove majority of NFL-period occupancy
Marriott Bonvoy members accounted for 80 per cent of occupancy across the group’s Melbourne hotels during the NFL period, drawing on the program’s 295-million-member base. At Melbourne hotels where the US wasn’t the top source market, it ranked second behind Australia.
Marriott International regional vice president Australia, New Zealand and Pacific Jason Nuell said demand extended beyond the game itself. “Whilst the highest night of demand is the eve of the game itself, we were pleased to see that many of our guests extended their stays pre and post event to explore more of Melbourne and drive support for the city’s tourism,” Nuell said.
According to a Marriott Luxury Group survey cited by the company, 84 per cent of luxury travellers in Asia Pacific are motivated to travel for a high-profile or cultural event, rising to 92 per cent among Australian travellers.
Bonvoy Moments offered match hospitality access
As official hotel partner of the NFL, Marriott Bonvoy offered five Moments packages providing members hospitality access to the game. The program also partnered with former NFL player Todd Gurley and Paralympic champion Dylan Alcott on a 24-hour Melbourne city guide, distributed via Marriott Bonvoy’s Instagram as part of a global content series tied to NFL host destinations.
Nuell said the event reflected growing crossover between sport and travel demand for the brand. “We’re thrilled to continue our partnership with the NFL as the sport grows globally and brings passionate fans through to our hotels,” he said.
