MSC Group’s Cruise Division has officially inaugurated the new MSC Barcelona terminal, marking the first call of EXPLORA II at the terminal.
Dignitaries including Jose Antonio Santano Clavero, Carlos Prieto, Jordi Valls, Albert Dalmau, Jose Alberto Carbonell, Pierfrancesco Vago, Gianluca Suprani, and Anna Nash attended the commemorative ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Pierfrancesco Vago said that Barcelona has been a strategic partner for MSC Group and MSC Cruises for over four decades and 25 years respectively, and that the new terminal aligns with the city’s strategy for sustainable tourism, while bringing economic benefits to the region.
Terminal design and features
The terminal was designed by Catalonian architecture firm Ricardo Bofill Taller de Arquitectura. The design aims to provide continuity with the cruise experience, from passenger arrival to boarding.
The terminal includes a retail area, a spacious waiting lounge, and a VIP lounge for premium and luxury guests. The exterior features ceramic cladding inspired by Gaudi.
Environmental focus
The terminal incorporates energy-saving technologies and sustainable materials, including solar panels, optimised natural light, and a rainwater collection system. The terminal has achieved Gold Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.
Shore-to-ship power connectivity will be available in 2027.
