A purpose-built $1.5 million vessel has launched in Cairns, offering visitors a chance to explore the Great Barrier Reef on a half-day snorkelling tour. This new tour targets travellers with limited time, taking them to Briggs Reef—an untouched site not visited for nearly five years.
Pure Snorkelling is a collaboration between two family-owned operators with more than 60 years of combined experience in showcasing the Great Barrier Reef. The venture brings together Alan Wallish of Passions of Paradise and Perry Jones and Taryn Agius from Ocean Free and Ocean Freedom, operating a 40-seat boat constructed locally in Cairns.
Catering to short-stay visitors
Alan Wallish highlighted the demand for half-day activities among visitors arriving in Cairns with packed schedules.
“Many visitors are looking for activities they can enjoy soon after landing,” Wallish explained. “Pure Snorkelling offers a five-hour afternoon trip, with our vessel reaching the outer reef in under an hour. Guests can enjoy over two hours of snorkelling at Briggs Reef, known for its extraordinary coral cover.”
The vessel also has access to 14 alternate reef locations, including Sudbury Cay, Thetford, and Pretty Patches, ensuring flexibility for varying weather conditions.
Innovative design for comfort and functionality
Co-founder Perry Jones emphasised the boat’s innovative features, prioritising passenger comfort and versatility.
“The 12-metre aluminium vessel has a proven Z bow design to reduce wave impact and ensure a smoother ride,” Jones said. “With a capacity of 48 passengers, we’ve capped numbers at 40 for optimal comfort.”
Additional design highlights include wide side doors for research equipment, a front loader enabling beach access, and rear ladders for easy water entry.
A premium Great Barrier Reef experience
Pure Snorkelling aims to deliver an immersive reef experience, combining luxury and functionality.
“This tour is ideal for travellers seeking a deeper connection with this World Heritage wonder,” said Taryn Agius. “The vessel is also available for full-day and half-day charters, sunset cruises, and corporate events.”
The vessel departs from Cairns Marlin Marina at 12:30 pm daily. Tickets are priced at $199, including afternoon tea and new snorkelling gear.
Features of the vessel include:
- Two toilets.
- Two 40-inch TVs.
- A cruising speed of 24–26 knots with a maximum of over 40 knots.
- A fully accessible top deck for sunbathing.
- Multi-coloured LED lighting and a bar.
