Intrepid Travel is encouraging Australians planning a trip to Peru in 2027 to secure their Inca Trail permits well in advance, warning that limited daily access means permits can sell out months before departure.
The operator said Peru is currently its sixth most-booked destination for Australian and New Zealand travellers, with the seven-day Inca Trail Express remaining its most popular itinerary.
Limited permits drive early bookings
The Peruvian Government restricts access to the Inca Trail to 500 people per day, including travellers, guides and porters, leaving only around 200 permits available for visitors.
Intrepid recommends booking five to six months before departure, particularly for the peak travel period between May and September, with permits allocated on a first-come, first-served basis and linked to travellers’ passport details.
Alternative treks offer similar rewards
Intrepid Travel Trek Manager Maritza Chacacanta said many travellers underestimate how quickly permits are allocated and encouraged early planning to avoid disappointment.
She also highlighted the Quarry Trail and Salkantay Trek as alternatives for travellers unable to secure an Inca Trail permit, noting both routes offer mountain scenery, fewer crowds and finish at Machu Picchu.
