Set on the southern coast of Vanua Levu, Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort overlooks the peaceful waters of Savusavu Bay. This secluded, eco-conscious resort is just a short drive from Savusavu Airport, yet it feels like a world away, enveloped by swaying palms and lush rainforest.
Named after the famed ocean explorer, this award-winning resort is one of the South Pacific’s leading eco-luxury properties. With its emphasis on marine conservation, locally inspired activities, and warm Fijian hospitality, it offers a unique and deeply immersive experience for families, couples, and nature lovers alike.
About the resort

From the moment you arrive, you’re welcomed like family. Guests are met at both Nadi and Savusavu airports before being transferred to the resort. The warm Bula welcome sets the tone for a stay rooted in heartfelt service and sustainability.
The resort features a wealth of facilities, including a horizon-edge swimming pool, tennis and pickleball courts, a spa, daily yoga sessions, and a dedicated dive centre that honours Jean-Michel Cousteau’s oceanic legacy. For families, the complimentary Bula Club offers structured programs for children and teens, complete with dedicated nannies and activities staff.
One of the most impressive features is the variety of excursions included in your stay – up to four offsite trips per week, ranging from guided snorkelling and village visits to rainforest hikes and cultural demonstrations. The commitment to eco-education is visible in the evening marine presentations and eco tours.
The Rooms

The resort offers a selection of traditional thatched-roof bures, blending rustic design with luxury comforts. Accommodation ranges from Gardenview and Oceanfront Bures to two-bedroom villas and the expansive Premier Oceanfront Villa.
I stayed in the Gardenview Bure, nestled within tropical gardens just a short stroll from the beach. The bure was incredibly spacious, cooled by both air conditioning and ceiling fans, with floor-to-ceiling louvred windows inviting in the island breeze. A private deck with hammock was the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring.
Inside, thoughtful touches included a daily replenished minibar, double vanity bathroom, Pure Fiji amenities, bathrobes, French press coffee, mosquito repellent, and turn-down service complete with the next day’s itinerary. The housekeeping and guest services teams were attentive and warm, always checking in with genuine smiles and tailored recommendations.
The Dining

Dining at the Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort is a relaxed, refined experience. All meals are included, with the main restaurant offering both adults-only and family-friendly dining areas overlooking the pool and bay.
Menus change daily and showcase local produce, freshly caught seafood, and international influences. Breakfast is an a la carte spread, while lunch and dinner present gourmet multi-course menus. Dietary needs are well catered for.
Private dining experiences are also a highlight. Choose from a romantic sunset meal at the pier end, a candlelit beach dinner, or even a picnic on the resort’s private island. Children can dine at the Bula Club with their buddies or join family meals in the restaurant.
Activities

Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort in Fiji offers an immersive blend of eco-luxury and cultural exploration, making it an exceptional destination for families seeking both relaxation and adventure.
One of the highlights of our stay was the Village Visit to Nukubalavu, where we were warmly welcomed by the local community. Engaging in traditional kava ceremonies and witnessing the intricate art of basket weaving provided a profound insight into Fijian culture. The genuine hospitality and storytelling enriched our understanding of the island’s heritage.
Venturing inland, the Guided Eco-Tour of the resort’s property was both educational and inspiring. Led by knowledgeable naturalists, we explored the lush botanical gardens, learning about native flora and the resort’s sustainable practices. The tour emphasized the resort’s commitment to environmental stewardship, highlighting initiatives like organic farming and coral reef conservation.
The Waterfall Tour was a family favourite, offering a scenic hike through verdant rainforests culminating in a refreshing swim beneath cascading waters. The trail was manageable for all ages, and the guides shared fascinating information about the local ecosystem, enhancing the experience.
Marine adventures abound at the resort, with snorkelling and diving excursions revealing the vibrant underwater world of the Namena Marine Reserve. Accompanied by the resort’s marine biologists, we encountered a dazzling array of coral formations and marine life, including reef sharks and colourful fish species. The resort’s dedication to marine conservation was evident, providing an enriching experience for both novice and experienced divers.
For families, the resort’s Bula Club offers an array of activities tailored for children, including the “School Under the Sea” program. This initiative combines fun and education, engaging young guests in coral planting, marine biology lessons, and cultural crafts, fostering a deep appreciation for the environment and Fijian traditions.
Hot Tips

Pack reef shoes and snorkelling gear if you prefer to use your own, although the resort provides equipment. Don’t miss the rainforest hike and the evening marine presentations – both offer a deeper understanding of the local ecosystem.
Families should take advantage of the Bula Club’s incredible nanny service, especially for younger children. Booking private dining experiences early in your stay is also recommended, as they can be popular.
