SAA releases statement to ‘restore sales confidence’ in the airline

The Republic of South Africa’s Department of Public Enterprises released the following statement regarding the current status, and future of, South African Airways (SAA).

The statement says “… the South African government is supporting South African Airways (SAA) in its efforts to restore sales confidence among its customer base.

In recent weeks, SAA has faced challenges surrounding a strike initiated by National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) and South African Airways Cabin Crew Association (SACCA), however restored flight services in late November.

Tim Clyde-Smith, SAA Asia Pacific Regional General Manager said SAA is determined to remain open for business.

“The seven day strike that ended 21 November has put SAA into a serious financial position. Pravin Gordhan, the Minister for Department of Public Enterprises in South Africa said in his media release on Sunday that SAA will only survive after the radical restructure. We are determined to survive and equally determined to continue our partnerships with our travel partners and deliver the service that our customers have been ticketed for.”

SAA management is working towards ensuring financial and operational sustainability going forward. The airline will take bold initiatives to increase its market share.

The Republic of South Africa’s Department of Public Enterprises said the South African government is committed to a viable, sustainable, profitable national airline. In pursuance of this, various options are being explored.
