A new trend is emerging among Australian school leavers, with many ditching international gap years in favour of domestic caravanning adventures.
As the cost of living continues to rise, young Australians are embracing the freedom, flexibility, and affordability of life on the road, creating a new ‘rite of passage’ that’s as adventurous as it is accessible.
Gen Z embracing van life
Recent data reveals a shift in how young Australians travel:
- 31.4 per cent of school leavers took a gap year in 2023, and 42 per cent chose domestic travel over long-haul international trips.
- Gen Z and Millennials now make up 45 per cent of the caravan and camping market, surpassing the 36 per cent of traditional grey nomads.
- 22 per cent of younger Australians have purchased their own recreational vehicle (RV), further driving the movement.
Jason Plant, CEO of Caravanning Queensland, highlights the trend’s momentum saying, “Young Australians are redefining travel by choosing van life. It’s more than a trip – it’s a lifestyle that allows them to explore Australia’s beauty, work in regional communities, and connect with like-minded adventurers. This vibrant movement shows no signs of slowing.”
Inspiring the next wave
Mia and Brody, two young Aussies who turned their gap year into a long-term road trip, are emblematic of this trend. Initially grounded by COVID, the duo decided to explore Australia in their van, visiting breathtaking locations and supporting local communities along the way. Nearly three years later, they’re still on the road, proving that caravanning isn’t just for retirees but for anyone seeking adventure and connection.
The rise of caravanning
The growing appeal of van life has also introduced new travel styles, from solo adventures and ‘roadschooling’ families to newlywed nomads and pet-friendly travel companions. For many, the nomadic lifestyle offers the chance to embrace Australia’s natural beauty and regional charm while supporting local economies.
