Sofitel Melbourne on Collins is celebrating its 30th anniversary by recognising 30 of its longest-serving staff, collectively representing more than 871 years of service at the hotel.
Long-serving staff and celebrity guests mark milestone

Among the recognised staff are Debbie Tay, senior accounts officer, and Terence Murphy, guest relations manager, whose combined service spans 71 years. The hotel has hosted notable guests over three decades including Sir Cameron Mackintosh, Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, Jane Fonda, Lady Gaga, Queen Mary of Denmark and Kylie Minogue.
Terence Murphy said long-term guest relationships have defined his time at the hotel. “You welcome someone for the first time and then they come back for an anniversary, a birthday or another special occasion, and before you know it you’ve known them for 20 or even 30 years,” Murphy said.
Stephan Leroy, the hotel’s general manager, said the anniversary celebrates the people connected to the property as much as the hotel itself. “When you look back over 30 years, you realise how many people’s lives have crossed paths with this hotel,” Leroy said.
Hotel maintains strong ties to Melbourne’s arts community

Sofitel Melbourne on Collins joined the Sofitel brand in 1996, located at the Paris end of Collins Street within Collins Place, designed by architect I.M. Pei, whose work also includes the Louvre Pyramid. The hotel has built a long-running relationship with Melbourne’s creative community, currently including a partnership with Victorian Opera’s Behind the Curtain exhibition, serving as official premium hotel partner for SIX The Musical’s Melbourne season, and supporting First Nations arts through the Birrarangga Film Festival. Artwork by Melbourne artist Emma Stenhouse is currently on display in the hotel’s Sofi’s Lounge.
For agents and event planners working with Sofitel Melbourne on Collins, the anniversary reinforces the property’s positioning as a long-established luxury hotel with deep ties to Melbourne’s arts and cultural calendar, relevant for clients seeking accommodation connected to the city’s theatre, opera and exhibition programming.
