Sunshine Coast Airport CEO to step down

Sunshine Coast Airport CEO Chris Mills will step down later this year, ending a tenure that oversaw major infrastructure investment and continued passenger growth at one of Australia’s fastest-growing regional airports.

Mills announced his resignation on 28 May, saying he had accepted an opportunity outside the aviation sector after helping position the airport for its next phase of expansion.

The leadership change comes as Sunshine Coast Airport progresses a $170 million terminal redevelopment and broader commercial growth plans aimed at supporting increasing passenger demand and regional connectivity.

Major projects continue at Sunshine Coast Airport

During his time as CEO, Mills helped drive several strategic developments, including the airport’s terminal expansion project and approval of the Gateway Precinct Masterplan.

The terminal redevelopment, which began in October 2025, will double the size of the terminal footprint, expand retail and food offerings, and increase airline capacity with two additional gates.

The airport also completed the first stage of its redevelopment earlier this year with the opening of a new outbound baggage facility.

“Sunshine Coast Airport is in a strong position, with a clear vision, a capable team and a pipeline of strategic projects that will support the next phase of growth,” Mills said.

Airport forecasts continued growth

Sunshine Coast Airport currently supports direct domestic services to Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Cairns, alongside international connections via Auckland and Bali.

Passenger numbers are projected to reach 1.8 million in 2026, growing to 2.4 million annually by 2030.

Sunshine Coast Airport Chair David Ryan said Mills had played an important role in progressing the airport’s long-term strategy.

“Chris has played an important role in building a positive and collaborative culture, and his commitment and leadership has been instrumental in progressing key strategic initiatives,” Ryan said.

Recruitment process underway

The airport has begun the search for a new CEO, with Mills remaining in the role during the transition period later this year.

Sunshine Coast Airport said it remained focused on delivering future aviation and commercial growth opportunities for the region.
