Tierra Atacama sets new benchmark for luxury in Chile

Tierra Atacama, one of Chile’s most iconic luxury lodges, has officially reopened following a year-long, USD$20 million transformation that has elevated the property to a new standard in experiential luxury travel.

Located in San Pedro de Atacama, the reimagined lodge is now welcoming guests with redesigned spaces, new suites, enhanced dining, and a deeper connection to its cultural and natural heritage.

Part of the Baillie Lodges portfolio, Tierra Atacama sits within a lush desert oasis in the heart of the Atacama Desert—renowned as the world’s driest non-polar desert—framed by uninterrupted views of the Licancabur Volcano and the Andes. Floor-to-ceiling windows throughout the lodge and suites immerse guests in this breathtaking landscape from every angle.

Thoughtful design meets local heritage

Originally opened in 2008, the lodge’s 2025 refurbishment was led by Tierra Hotels founder Miguel Purcell, alongside returning Chilean architect Matías González and interior designer Carolina Delpiano. Their vision has preserved the spirit of the original property while introducing contemporary refinements that honour local materials, craftsmanship, and culture.

Four new exclusive suites now feature private plunge pools and dedicated vehicles and guides, offering an unprecedented level of privacy and personalised exploration. The total number of suites has been reduced from 32 to 28, ensuring a more intimate and spacious guest experience.

Throughout the lodge, locally sourced travertine marble from Calama and deep desert-inspired hues add warmth and rustic elegance. More than 40 local artisans and designers contributed bespoke pieces to the interiors, reinforcing the lodge’s connection to the Atacama’s cultural identity.

A celebration of Chilean flavours and craftsmanship

The culinary offering has undergone a complete transformation, with the addition of open grill stations near the main restaurant. Here, guests can enjoy dishes inspired by regional traditions, set against sweeping views of the Andes. A newly built wine cellar showcases the best of Chilean viticulture, while an open kitchen brings diners closer to the culinary theatre unfolding around them.

The lodge’s spa has also been enhanced, now featuring a new couples’ treatment room and wellness spaces designed for relaxation and rejuvenation. Outside, a sunken fire lounge offers a peaceful space to connect with fellow travellers while taking in the expansive desert views and Atacama’s famously star-filled night skies.

Honouring legacy and leading into the future

Built on the site of a 150-year-old cattle corral, Tierra Atacama has retained key elements of its original adobe architecture, blending old and new through the work of landscape architect Teresa Moller. Native vegetation and the original walls have been carefully preserved and integrated into the updated design.

Miguel Purcell said the transformation reflects both a respect for the past and a commitment to the future of luxury travel in Chile.

“It has been a privilege to be entrusted with the stewardship of Tierra Atacama’s legacy while taking the property to a leading position in Chile’s luxury lodging scene,” he said.

“We are committed to honouring our history, while offering guests exceptional experiences that combine luxury, sustainability, and a deep connection with the extraordinary natural and cultural environment of San Pedro de Atacama.”
