Fresh back from a famil with Back-Roads Touring exploring France on the Jewels of Southwest France tour, Greg Close, Director of Live the Dream Travel, gives Travel Monitor a recap of his experience and what to expect from a Back-Roads tour.
Discovering the Jewels of Southwest France with Back-Roads Touring
Tour Destination: France
Tour Duration: 11 days
There’s something undeniably special about Southwest France – a timeless region dotted with storybook castles, medieval villages and rolling vineyards. I recently had the pleasure of experiencing this picturesque corner of the world on Back-Roads Touring’s Jewels of Southwest France itinerary, and it was nothing short of magical.
Travelling in May 2025 as a tour escort with 16 of our clients, I had high expectations – not just from previous personal experience with Back-Roads (I previously toured Enchanting Southern Italy in 2018), but also from the wonderful feedback our agency has received over the years. This was my first time escorting this specific itinerary, and from the moment our Tour Leader, Charlie Jaques, reached out to introduce himself before departure (even setting up a dedicated WhatsApp group for our travellers), I knew we were in excellent hands.
A Journey Through History and Charm

Back-Roads has a way of bringing Europe’s hidden gems to life, and this tour was no exception. From the dramatic clifftop setting of Beynac Castle (an absolute highlight) to the cobblestone charm of Sarlat-la-Canéda and the awe-inspiring medieval fortress of Carcassonne, the itinerary struck a perfect balance between sightseeing and downtime. Multi-night stays in key locations allowed us to really settle in and explore at a relaxed pace – a refreshing change from the usual rush of traditional touring.
One truly unforgettable moment was our stay in the fairytale village of Castelnau de Montmiral. Nestled amongst the rolling hills of Tarn, it delighted every single person in our group with its authenticity, beauty and serenity. These moments, unhurried and unspoiled, are what set Back-Roads apart.
Characterful Stays & Exceptional Dining
Accommodation throughout was of a high standard, offering charm and comfort in equal measure. While staying within the walls of Carcassonne would have added an extra touch of romance, the logistics for a group of our size made it impractical. That said, Hotel Barry was a standout – offering not only beautiful surrounds but also one of the most memorable meals of the trip.
Culinary highlights were plentiful, with local dining experiences giving us a true taste of the region. From rustic feasts in country inns to fine French fare, each meal was an experience in itself – none more so than the exceptional dinner we enjoyed at Hotel Barry.
A Tour Leader Who Truly Leads
Charlie, our Tour Leader, was nothing short of phenomenal. His genuine passion for the region, coupled with an ability to go above and beyond at every opportunity, elevated the experience for all. He struck the perfect balance between informative guiding and giving us space to discover on our own – something I believe is key for this type of traveller.
The transport was comfortable and convenient, and the semi-independent structure of the tour allowed our guests to really engage with the destination on their own terms. It’s a format I’d recommend for anyone who wants to combine enriching experiences with a touch of freedom.
Final Reflections
While the stunning scenery and immersive experiences were undoubtedly a highlight, what truly made this tour unforgettable were the connections formed – both within our group and with the places we visited. From the WhatsApp group that’s still buzzing weeks after we returned, to the shared memories over a glass of local wine, the sense of camaraderie was something really special.
Would I recommend the Jewels of Southwest France tour? Without hesitation. It’s immersive, educational, and designed with care. Ideal for curious travellers seeking authenticity, history, and a deeper connection to the places they visit – all delivered with Back-Roads’ signature warmth and charm.
And a final tip for future travellers? Pack your sense of adventure – and your favourite pillow. After all, nothing beats a good night’s sleep after a day of French discovery.
