Trade Famil highlights Kyushu’s cruise potential

The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) recently concluded a successful trade familiarisation trip in Japan, spotlighting Kyushu and regional Japan as unique travel destinations for Australian cruise travellers.

Held from 15–20 October 2024, the famil offered a select group of Australian travel professionals an immersive experience, showcasing the region’s coastal attractions and cultural highlights.

The Cruise-Focused Trade Familiarisation Tour took participants on a four-night, five-day journey through Kyushu’s key destinations, including Fukuoka, Beppu, Takachiho Gorge, and Kumamoto. Organised by JNTO, the tour provided insights into Kyushu’s scenic and accessible ports, positioning the region as an ideal addition to pre- and post-cruise travel itineraries.

Participants included three Australian product managers, who were accompanied by a JNTO host and an English-speaking guide. The program highlighted Kyushu’s diverse offerings, from its coastal beauty to its rich cultural experiences, ensuring the participants gained firsthand knowledge to better tailor their travel products.

Enhancing Australian awareness of Kyushu

Harriett Bougher, Business Development and Senior Assistant Marketing Manager for JNTO, hosted the famil and emphasised its importance in promoting Kyushu to the Australian market.

“We showcased the beauty, easy accessibility, and uniqueness of areas in Kyushu that are still relatively unknown by Australians,” said Bougher. “Our goal is for participants to leverage their firsthand experiences to craft tour products that will inspire more Australians to explore Kyushu as part of their pre- or post-cruise travels.”

Building new opportunities for the cruise market

The famil aligns with JNTO’s broader strategy to increase Australian engagement with lesser-known Japanese regions. By enabling travel professionals to experience Kyushu’s appeal up close, JNTO aims to develop new cruise-focused itineraries that highlight the region’s charm and accessibility.

With participants now equipped to share their insights and develop innovative travel products, Kyushu is poised to become a key destination for Australian travellers seeking unique and culturally rich cruise experiences.
