Travelex sees prepaid travel card usage surge

Travelex has reported a sharp rise in the popularity of its prepaid Travelex Money Card, with reload transactions increasing by 31 per cent in Australia between January and May 2025 compared to the same period last year. The spike signals a growing preference among travellers for digital, secure, and flexible ways to manage their travel money.

App upgrade drives growth

The surge also includes a 54 per cent increase in reload penetration—reflecting a growing trend of travellers choosing prepaid card reloads over physical cash. Travelex attributes part of this growth to the relaunch of its Travelex Money Card app, which now offers a faster, more intuitive interface allowing users to top-up, track, and manage up to 10 currencies securely on the go.

“We’re delighted that our new Travelex Money Card app has been a major driver of growth,” said Simon Jackson, Chief Customer Officer at Travelex.

“It offers customers a fast and seamless top-up experience, making it even easier to spend safely abroad.”

Outpacing industry forecasts

The growth significantly exceeds the 15.3 per cent annual growth rate forecast by Allied Market Research for the global prepaid travel card market. With the rising demand for mobile-first, budget-friendly travel money solutions, Travelex’s performance points to a shift in consumer behaviour, especially among younger and tech-savvy travellers.
