The data is in, and Virtuoso has released the top 5 Luxury Travel Trends for Australia and New Zealand. These trends point to travellers wanting an authentic and adventurous experience and a desire to forge deeper connections while travelling.
More than 2,200 agencies worldwide participated in the survey, which offered insights into the top trends for 2025.
1. Ice-elated Escapes
As “coolcations” rise in popularity, travellers are turning to cold-weather destinations to escape the heat. Antarctica tops the list for 2025, with its untouched landscapes and growing cruise options, making it a prime choice for Australian luxury travellers. Norway also emerged as a new favourite.
2. Sailing Solo
Solo travel is booming, especially through cruises. Expedition, river, and ocean cruises offer solo travellers both independence and social opportunities, attracting individuals who want to explore at their own pace while having the option of companionship on smaller ships.
3. Born to be Mild
Adventure meets relaxation in “soft” adventure travel, where wellness and activity combine. Destinations like Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and Vietnam are favoured for experiences that refresh both body and mind, attracting those seeking balance rather than adrenaline.
4. You Tell Me Travel
Travel inspiration from films, documentaries, and social media—especially TikTok—is leading luxury travellers to seek new and offbeat destinations. Many now turn to travel advisors, asking for recommendations rather than coming in with specific destinations in mind.
5. Palate and Place
Culinary experiences remain a top priority, with high-end travellers seeking immersive, local dining beyond typical restaurant meals. Food tours, hidden markets, and even food trucks are curated to showcase authentic flavours and local culture.
Top Destinations and Travel Motivations
Antarctica leads as both the top destination on the rise and the preferred adventure spot, followed by popular destinations like Portugal, Norway, and Vietnam. Key motivations for travel include crossing off bucket-list experiences, celebrating milestones, and enjoying time with loved ones.
For family travel, Japan, Hawaii, and Italy top the list, offering cultural experiences and family-friendly attractions. Italy, Japan, and Greece remain popular international destinations, with Rome as the leading city, followed by Tokyo.
This Luxe Report underscores the shifting preferences of luxury travellers in Australia and New Zealand, reflecting a growing interest in meaningful experiences and a blend of adventure, wellness, and culinary immersion for 2025.
