Washington Dulles International Airport is set for a major overhaul after the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, United Airlines and the U.S. Department of Transportation announced a capital investment program worth more than US$20 billion.
The decade-long redevelopment will deliver more than five million square feet of new and upgraded facilities, modernising the airport while preserving the iconic design of its main terminal.
Major upgrades planned across the airport
The project will include new and expanded concourses, upgraded ticketing and security facilities, additional gates and an expanded AeroTrain network that will replace the airport’s long-standing mobile lounge vehicles.
International travellers will also benefit from a new U.S. Customs facility with direct walkable access from arrival gates, while improved baggage systems, additional lounges and expanded retail offerings are planned as part of the redevelopment.
United strengthens Washington hub
United Airlines, the largest carrier in the Washington region, will partner with the Airports Authority to deliver the project, building on its long-term investment in the Dulles hub.
Construction will be completed in stages while the airport remains operational. The first milestone will see the opening of the new Concourse E later this year, featuring 14 United gates, direct AeroTrain access and new passenger lounges.
