Admittedly I hadn’t visited the Gold Coast for what seemed like a century. So when the opportunity presented itself, I jumped at the chance. Not only was I pleasantly surprised with what Australia’s Favourite Playground has to offer, but I am also already considering making another appearance in this thriving metropolis soon.
How to Get There and Getting Around
There are direct flights from all capital cities into Coolangatta Airport, or as the locals call it – Cooly. Access from regional cities typically entails flying into Brisbane then transferring via train or shuttle bus to the Gold Coast. Hiring a car is also an excellent option for those who want flexibility.
Getting around the Gold Coast is a piece of cake. Car rental by far is the best mode of transport in terms of freedom. If driving is not your cup of tea, the light rail, buses and taxis are great options. If you want to live on the wild side you can hire an e-bike or e-scooter to zip around.
In the current COVID climate be mindful of border restrictions and check with your local travel agent what is required for each state.

Miss Moneypenny’s, Broadbeach
Miss Moneypenny’s radiates sophistication yet decorum with its warm palates and edgy decor. The cuisine is modern Mediterranean by Executive Chef, Adam Dundas-Taylor, who has worked with the likes of Jamie Oliver. Apart from their regular impressive offerings, Miss Moneypenny’s host their legendary Bottomless Lunch on Sundays and interactive Cocktail Making classes by arrangement.
Elk Espresso, Broadbeach
Elk Espresso is pretty as a picture with vibrant plants aplenty and a humble elk portrait on the wall. The meals are equally as pretty presented like Picasso paintings on a plate. The menu includes the classics, and if it’s uniqueness you crave, Elk Espresso delivers with dishes such as Pork Belly Benedict, Mango Weis Bar Waffles and Spiced Cauliflower Burgers.
Café DBar, Coolangatta
Located on the QLD/NSW border, Café Dbar radiates a laid-back surfer vibe. The two-storey café is perched on a hill at Point Danger, so the ocean views are remarkable. The popular menu picks are the Bec Brekky Burger, Mushrooms on Toast, and the Vietnamese Omelette boasting the delicate blue swimmer crab.

Avani Broadbeach Residences, Broadbeach
Strategically located in downtown Broadbeach, the Avani Broadbeach is the perfect pad to explore this lively area’s prime dining and entertainment assets. The one and two-bedroom suites are tasteful yet underrated with their clean and fresh lines. The ocean views from the balconies are striking. The two-bedroom apartments are perfect for families or a group of friends with plenty of room for privacy.

Three months young and Gold Coast’s first and only airport hotel, the Rydges is ideal for discovering southern Gold Coast and northern New South Wales. The Salty Fox rooftop bar is the ultimate venue for a pre-dinner drink or two, and the cocktails are something to write home about.
