The Kingdom of Tonga has officially welcomed whale season 2025 with a flourish, kicking off one of the most promising years in recent memory. More than 50 humpback whale sightings have already been confirmed across the islands of Vavaʻu, Haʻapai, and Tongatapu within the first fortnight of July — signalling an early and vibrant start to the annual migration season.
These gentle giants make their way from the icy waters of Antarctica to Tonga’s calm, warm seas each year to breed and give birth. As one of the few places in the world where people can legally swim with humpback whales in the wild, Tonga offers a truly unforgettable experience.
New cultural connections deepen visitor experience
This year, Tonga’s Ministry of Tourism has introduced a suite of new community-led initiatives that blend cultural immersion with nature-based travel. Alongside the whale swims, visitors can now enjoy village tours, traditional ʻumu feasts, and storytelling experiences that celebrate Tonga’s cultural heritage and environmental stewardship.
Ms Teisa Fifita-Tupou, Head of Marketing & Promotions for the Tonga Tourism Authority, says the goal is to ensure that tourism uplifts both the marine environment and the local communities.
“We are proud to share this special season with the world,” she said.
“Tonga remains one of the only places on Earth where people can legally swim with whales – and we’re committed to doing this in a way that protects the whales and uplifts our people.”
A season not to be missed
Running from July through October, the whale season reaches its peak between mid-August and September. With a limited number of licences issued to ensure sustainability, advance bookings are highly recommended.
