Australia issues travel warning amid India–Pakistan tensions

The Australian Government has issued updated travel advisories for India and Pakistan, urging Australians to exercise a high degree of caution due to growing regional instability.

Tensions have intensified following India’s missile strikes on nine targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir on 7 May 2025. These actions came in retaliation for an attack in April that killed 26 Indian tourists in Kashmir. Pakistan denounced the strikes as an act of war, citing civilian casualties and vowing to retaliate. Subsequent exchanges of fire along the Line of Control have led to more casualties and evacuations on both sides.

Disruptions to travel and increased risk

The rising conflict has disrupted travel, with the Wagah–Attari border crossing closed and several regional airports shut down. Airlines have cancelled or rerouted flights, and travellers are being urged to stay informed via their airlines and check their travel insurance policies, as coverage may not apply in restricted areas.

Smartraveller advisories

Australia’s Smartraveller website provides the following guidance:

  • India: Travellers should exercise a high degree of caution due to terrorism, crime, and the risk of civil unrest. Travel is advised against in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir (excluding Ladakh), the India–Pakistan border area (excluding the Wagah crossing), and the state of Manipur.
  • Pakistan: The Government recommends reconsidering the need to travel, citing an unpredictable security environment, closed borders, and potential flight disruptions.

Australians in the region are advised to follow local news, remain alert, and adhere to any directives issued by local authorities.
